The Ref 54 is billed as inspired by the Mark VI. Instrument Barn Special Included with purchase is a professional set up, a box of Vandoren reeds, upgraded black neck strap, an Optimum ligature, and a Vandoren V5 Series mouthpiece. The Reference 54 is based on the almost mythical Selmer Mark VI and doesn’t disappoint. It was factory set-up for Rob Buckland (composer, musician, lecturer). It’s the only alto Selmer currently makes that tunes easily with a Meyer or other typical jazz mouthpiece. SELMER PARIS REFERENCE 54 ALTO - near perfect condition. The Reference 54 is my favorite modern Selmer without any question. This is a very nice Selmer Paris Kookaburra Reference 54 alto saxophone, serial number 701467. If it has a weakness it's that it takes some careful aligning and setting up in order to give its best - and its performance degrades quite rapidly if this is not done. They’re a lot like vintage Selmer resonators, but they give you a bit more punch and volume out of the horn. The placement of these toneholes allowed Conn to come up with arguably one of the most responsive bell key tables ever seen on a horn before Selmer set the new standard. He makes his own large slightly domed resonators, which is what you get on this instrument. Ken Beason is an experienced saxophone repairman and designer, with a great reputation. They’re built to play GREAT, but just need to be setup to play their best after the fact. Designed after the legendary Mark VI model, the Selmer Paris Reference 54 Eb Alto Saxophone features special dark lacquer finish, high F key. Harsh, I know, but that’s why used modern Selmers tend to sell so much lower than new ones. You can buy a new Ref 54 for way more money, and it won’t play this well either right out of the case, or especially a few months later after the factory pad job starts to fall apart on you in a hundred little ways.
